NY at it’s Best (My Building)

So today I went to my apartment person, for a request to change my bathroom tiles. I had to talk to a certain person, well I was told to. So I did walk up to him, when I did, he was pretty rude, at least I thought. He was like you can’t ask me to do something, I was like, I am not, I had put a request, they came and saw, and said you are to onlyone who can make a decision, so I just wanted to talk to you. He told me to put a request in the building, of course I did. But being me, and time of the month and all hormonal, I became teary, and put request, and then picked up packages being all teary and tears rolling down and me trying to control them.
Well as I walked with my heavy bag of laundry and the Man I spoke about earlier, decided to come and see the bathroom with another worker. As they walked to the apartment, none of those men even offered to help me to pick up my laundry, as I dragged along my bag…all I can say is wow..and simple decency I learned while growing up.
Well I did not tell my husband about this, but I did tell him about the request I had put in. He was upset, of course he has never liked anyone talking to me that way. He asked me to complain. I said to him, no, I did not want too. Then he said, the unnamed worked, only did this, b/c he did not want me to complain about him. My husband had a point we pay rent to live here and should get good services.
But me being me, I told him, no I don’t feel like complaining. I said I just want to forgive and forget and add this as my experience to all the other experiences in NY. My point was, since the time I have moved to NY, I have had such rude experiences, but if I did not have those experiences, I would be the same naive person when I left NC in 2003 and people would continue to say things to me and use me and I said, if it was not for NY, I would not have learned to stand up for myself and say things and approach things the way I can today. Plus, you never know what is going through the person’s day or problems they are encountering.
Over the years, few things I can remember. One time in a bank, everything was stolen from our car, the bank lady in Chase was so rude, blamed me, and made me cry, she was apparently the best person in their bank….I was like, what about customer service? Well, that one for sure needed complaining and my husband did take care of it, and I did get an apology letter. I had bad experiences at work, my boss made me cry. I have so many stories about bad customer service in NY.
But this is what I am today, due to these experiences. Recently in Mumbai airport, the parking, we went to pick our American friend, we got a taxi and went in the airport. After we pick up Adam, the security stopped us, they asked for money or to switch taxi. The theory was, you should take a taxi from the airport so wait in line. Well after arguing and our friend watching this, I went to the main person’s office, and I gave them my piece of mind, he was sitting with 5 men in the room. I said, ” I have a American friend, arrived after a long journey, I don’t live in India, I took a taxi to this place from where I live, how am I suppose to get here, if I don’t bring a taxi from outside to the airport? I can switch to a taxi from airport if I knew the rule, but where is the rule stated, I don’t live here, plus, I don’t want a person from USA and waiting in a long line to get a taxi for another hour. Plus, I am not going to pay any fee’s….”, well guess what, I got out free, without paying anything….
SO moral of the story, NY teaches us a lot, customer service sucks most of the time, not all the time. But today with the experience, NY taught me to be strong, stand up for what I believe in and today I feel I can go to any third world country where things are rougher and stand up for things I don’t agree or bad customer service. Not to say always forgive, sometimes you don’t want anyone else to experience the same thing you experienced. But always look at the situation, before taking any action.
NY is NY. It has positives and negatives. NY has culture, where else can you find that. New Experiences. NY is Ny and nothing beats it, at least for now…:). Just felt like sharing today
